| This film has been subjected to numerous times as "the worst of Abbott and Costello." I have not seen that many A & C so far images, but of which I have seen I would say "Comin 'Round the Mountain" and "Lost in Alaska" and perhaps even "Meet the Keystone Kops" are worse than this one, therefore, the above statement can not be true. The best of "Going to Mars" are the special effects, which are creative and sometimes even ingenious, before they complain of a "modern" perspective, consider that at about the same level with those of For example, "Superman IV" - and that was done 34 years later! Unfortunately, like "Meet the Keystone Kops," this movie gives you the impression that more time was devoted to the art of the tricks and the effects on the supply of material and funny enough for Abbott and Costello routines. The most fun of the film comes from the beginning: Dr. Orville: "Why did you tell them they are Orville doctor?" Lou: "I did not tell them, they told me." And while the absence of songs is welcome, the two convicts who escaped eventually join A & C on their journey to Venus reach the screen too much time on their own. (**) |
| If you like Abbott and Costello, you will like this movie. It is true that the form and is funny in the style of that era. It has some slapstick, but not enough to be dominant. When we look back now, the special effects seem pretty lame, but that is part of the appeal to me, the fact that the effects were what appeared in that day. |
| *** *** Saboteurs This film is surpisingly low side, given that a lot oh jokes are hilarious, especially those in the bank. What makes the movie, however, is that the scenes on the planet Venus is stupid and unrealistic and Miss New Jersey, "was really, really, really, garbage in it. Bud and Lou are fun, though (especially Lou), as the two bumbling, though well meaning public officials, who go to LA, and I think it is Mars (cue gags amusing), then Venus in the land and I believe that is LA (cue unfunny gags), silly, but excitin, and supeb SFX, bearing in mind that it was in the'50s, the two bank robbers are quite amusing, but the custard pie gag at the end reduces the film, because sa stupid final. Parties in class, type Z-acting parts, but always fun. ** 1 / 2 **** |
| Along with the Bowery Boys, the Three Stooges and maybe Elvis, is not as good shaking out in moving images quickly and in a tight budget that Abbott and Costello. Even today, comedians like Jerry Seinfeld and Carol Burnett have piled praise on the boys' brand of slapstick comedy. I've always felt that much underappreciated in their day. And as the years go by your presence on the tube has unfortunately declined. Most children today probably have never been exposed to the thin straight man and his steadfast friend. I have only one A & C comedy. That's all. Why? Perhaps because of his "Allura," the queen, played by the beautiful B-movie siren Mari Blanchard. Discard the "spell" a theory must assume the special effects are great. And the fantasy elements are surprisingly pleasant and well thought out and executed. The rocket nearly decapitates the Statue of Liberty, refuses to pay the toll at the Lincoln Tunnel and scoots under the Brooklyn Bridge. But the film is just a stroll through a different era: a moment of comedy, scientists and space Babes. Well, everyone should enjoy a guilty pleasure. |
